Tell el-Amarna, Egyp

Tell el-Amarna, Egypt Arial view of the excavation site at the end of the season. Photography by Gwil Owen. The city of Amarna, built as the capital of the Pharaoh and religious reformer Akhenaten was inhabited from 1347 B.C., and was abandoned after his death in 1336. Although the city's temples and palaces where largely reused, what remains provides a remarkable snapshot of an ancient city and the lives of its people
